Overview

The Continuing Professional Education (CPE) Programme for TCM practitioners was first implemented in January 2013 on a voluntary basis.  With the enactment of the TCMP (Amendment) Act 2020, the compulsory CPE Programme for TCM practitioners was implemented with effect from 1 Apr 2020 for all fully and conditionally registered TCM practitioners to meet the compulsory CPE requirements before their PCs are renewed.  

The purpose is to enable registered TCM practitioners to increase their knowledge in TCM and improve their professional performance. Patients and society at large want to be assured that the TCM practitioners they consult are offering them good quality care.

However, it is to be noted that attending a CPE event like a conference, seminar or lecture for a short duration will not be sufficient for a registered TCM practitioner to gain the necessary competency to practise in that area. TCM practitioners must have acquired the relevant qualifications, appropriate training, and clinical experience accepted by the Board.

A TCM practitioner shall provide competent and appropriate care to his patient.  Where there is any doubt as to whether any treatment is unconventional or whether it is acceptable in Singapore, the TCM practitioner must seek approval from the TCM practitioners Board in writing before they can proceed with such treatment.

Clause 4.1.1 (e) of the Ethical Code and Ethical Guidelines for TCM practitioners states as follows:

“A TCM practitioner shall only use appropriate and generally accepted methods of TCM treatment when attending to his patient. He shall not use unorthodox TCM treatment or any treatment that may tarnish the reputation of the TCM profession. Where a TCM practitioner has any doubt as to whether any treatment is unorthodox or may tarnish the reputation of the TCM profession, the TCM practitioner shall obtain clarifications from the Board in writing before proceeding with such treatment.”
